Cool. So feel I. I like the rigorous syntactic and full refactor-ability check that a Statically Typed language offers you. I absolutely need compile-time checks to be as comprehensive as possible. True that Groovy can implement compile-time type check, but still....

while quite a few people use the abstraction of slf4j (I wonder how many users of logback also checked slf4j, since the recommended way to use logback is to go through slf4j...)

Anyway having used myself log4j for several DECADES, I can only recommend upgrading to logback, it's effectively rich with new features and substantially very similar to good old log4j...

Elasticsearch seems to be still quite a niche technology... personally I foresee a great growth (I normally fail all my forecasts anyway... in 1986 I forecast no future for Windows.. and in 1995 no future for Java...)

I can't agree more.... too few.... has it really got to be like that? Why so few women are in IT in Europe and US? In India they are a LOT more, up to 50%.... our current development team is composed almost entirely of women, and they are doing a very good job. The Administrators on the other hand are almost all men, and they are true slackers.

I suspect that most of the voters are from Asian countries, where IT still offers a lot of opportunities. My perception is that in "the West" (Europe, USA) IT has lost most of its appeal, after the immense wave of offsourcing which has taken place in the last 10 years.... almost impossible to join a large development project.

For me, IT was a VERY exciting field in the late 1990.... I have been on really large projects and one had the sensation of changing the world... most of my colleagues were really bright professionals, and they have been very successful in professional life.

Now one has really to struggle to find a challenging project, and the market is flooded with unqualified demotivated resources.

Ok, it seeems that we are all tuned on the same wavelength: we like to do technical work, and we feel deeply disturbed when less-technical people interfere with our thinking process. Or when politics intervene in our scientific life.

Truth is, we must all justify our cost towards management. So, unfortunately, some marketing and some politics are necessary.

Agile poll result

most voters are quite comfortable about Agile, although there is still some skepticism or unawareness about the methodology. Honestly I was expecting much more adversity.

I have worked on a project where "Agile" was invoked as a pretext to be just lazy and bullshitters, so I have grown some hostility against Agile. In normal projects, where people are honest and competent, being Agile and XP (open to communication, short iterations, constant verification, automation, peer programming...) is the best way to deliver quickly some working code.
