Installing git on Ubuntu

"apt-get install git" not necessarily will work, especially if you are behind a proxy. This is how I have done it:
sudo su - root
export http_proxy=http://myusername:mypassword@myproxyhost:myproxyport
apt-get install git

If you get:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

then make sure you are root, and eventually if it keep bugging you, just restart the box. This worked for me.

All these things could be self evident for a Linux administrator, but surely some more helpful error messages would not hurt...

Download LinuxLive USB Creator :

The USB creator is very self-explanatory

Ubuntu 11.10 restore traditional desktop

I have upgraded my Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 ... it took one hour to do the upgrade, and once restarted I was freaked.
The traditional, stern and essential Ubuntu look and feel was gone, replaced by a google-iphonish display. Crap! Don't do that to me! I am not a sissy! I like STERN ESSENTIAL interfaces.

So here I find this post:

http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2011/09/11/install-the-classic-desktop-in-ubuntu-11-10/

and I do:

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

then restart, and before I login I choose the "gnome classic, no effects" interface.

and life is "almost" back to its usual course.

Please notice also that the very important item "System Setting" is hidden somewhere in the top right button.... not a very smart choice IMHO

Ubuntu 10 64 bits boot CD asking for Username and Password

At first the boot CD was not asking any credentials, now it does and I have tried everything in vain (my HD installation username, administrator, ubuntu, various passwords and blanck passwords, blank username...).

see:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/download-ubuntu-linux-9-10-iso-cd-dvd-images.html

I see that this is a very common issue, in the above post they say it's some hardware device problem (????). Anyway luckily I have also a 32 bits CD and I am using it to do the partition resizing I needed.

UBRUNTUS vs WIDOWS

After a virus has contaminated several machines in the organization, many of us have installed a dual partition system with UBUNTU and Windows XP 32 bits. Actually most people have wiped out Windows altogether.

Everyone else chose UBUNTU 32 bits, I have installed the 64 bits version, which seems quite stable and happily addresses all my 6 GB RAM.

In UBUNTU we run a VMWare virtual machine (4 GB Ram) running Fedora and Weblogic + OSB 11. It's a bit slower, but it has the great advantage that I can make a backup every day and we can replicate a new dev env in seconds.

The title is because a friend of mine always call it UBRUNTU, plus it reminds me Julius Caesar and Brutus. WIDOWS because men commit suicide for the depression of using Windows.
